Much like bad weather swept through the northwest the previous evening, Manchester City blew Manchester United away at the Etihad. It was a statement three goal victory for their manager's side due to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their leadership claims as they strengthened their position at the league summit.

Consecutive Setbacks for United

This result signalled consecutive league setbacks for Skinner's side for the first time since May 2024, placing them seven points off the top team with their championship aspirations hanging by a thread.

United’s capability to juggle domestic and continental football with a thin team has been a widely debated issue since they earned a place in the UCL. Considering the schedule, it always appeared this was the matchday that would truly test this fortitude. Sadly for the opposition, they seemed tired throughout, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

Skinner had attempted to freshen things up with a a few alterations. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all brought freshness, although the dropping of the on-form Malard to the sidelines raised a few eyebrows.

City, in comparison, have fewer loading worries. Andrée Jeglertz made one change from their most recent win over the Toffees with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since recovering from a fitness issue.

Commanding Opening Period

The storm clouds started to build for the United boss and his squad from the opening minute. This was a demonstration of the quality from City whose potent attack played with and pulled the visitors apart with a superb initial 45 minutes showing that saw them score three goals in 21 minutes.

This left the home team in a commanding position and saw the visitors all at sea. Prior to this match, United had allowed just six in this league campaign but they disintegrated in the presence of the hosts' offensive ingenuity.

Early Chances

The early indicators came quickly when Vivianne Miedema used her physicality to push Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot wide. Hemp was at the core of everything in the beginning, using the room left by Jayde Riviere down United’s right side. Her crosses were posing a threat and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg kicked off the line.

The Red Devils had a number of sorties ahead, their straightforward approach giving them alternatives in the flanks but they could not challenge the City goalkeeper. City, in the meantime, commanded possession, teasing their opposition and trying to draw them out of their structure.

Scoring Spree

They converted their dominance with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A ball to the back post was nodded across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to head in. It was Manchester City's 7th headed goal of the season.

They added to their lead with an additional two goals just before the interval. When Jade Rose was able to maraud through the middle from central defence, the play widened for City. The key Casparij picked the ball up on the right before providing a precise low cross for Shaw to tap home. Four minutes later, they had a additional score after a quick change in the ball saw Hemp afforded the space to fire a shot home from distance.

Second Half

The clearest change came from Skinner at the half-time as Melvine Malard was introduced for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the game. Former City player Park came nearest, rattling the post, but the visitors were offensively poor and failed to record a single shot on goal.

The home side, in contrast, could have extended their cushion when a delightful Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it mattered little to the hosts. Having failed to beat any opponent who ended above them last season, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against the Gunners and Manchester United to put them in a strong standing after the opening fixtures.
